最強守護神　命名為「李維拉」「霍夫曼」獎

美國職棒大聯盟決定，將以李維拉(Mariano Rivera)、霍夫曼(Trevor Hoffman)這兩名史上最強救援投手的名字，各自為美聯、國聯最佳救援投手獎項命名，以表彰兩人的貢獻。以後美聯最佳救援投手獎叫「李維拉獎」，國聯稱之為「霍夫曼獎」。
也就是說，以往每年只有一位的「年度最佳救援投手獎」，從今年起改為兩聯盟各選出一人。
李維拉生涯652次救援成功，19年選手生涯都效力於美聯的洋基隊；霍夫曼18年分別效力於國聯的教士和釀酒人隊取得601次救援成功，兩人戰功彪炳分居大聯盟史上救援排行榜第1、2名，足以象徵兩聯盟最具代表性的救援投手。
李維拉、霍夫曼也被選入推選最佳投手獎項的「9人小組」，另外7人包括已入選名人堂的救援投手艾克斯萊(Dennis Eckersley)、菲格斯(Rollie Fingers)、戈塞奇(Rich Gossage)、塞特(Bruce Sutter)及史密斯(Lee Smith)、法蘭柯(John Franco)、華格納(Billy Wagner)。
