偶爾也聽到世界公民的學員感嘆，英文講再久，好像也沒有native speaker那樣漂亮周到。缺了什麼？很可能是缺了euphemism（委婉）。

什麼叫委婉？看看幾個實例，「景氣差，企業要縮編，得裁員」時，你直覺想到的說法是什麼：

We're going to cut down on staff number.（我們即將刪減人事。）很直白的說法。
Our company is going to downsize and some staff will be fired.（公司縮小規模，會裁員。）這也說得通。

我們先來看看，「裁員」一般的說法是lay off。
The bank is going to lay off 500 staff in Asia to weather the financial crisis.（為因應金融危機，這家銀行將裁減亞洲區500名員工。）

也可以當名詞：
The financial crisis has led to massive layoffs in banks this year.（今年金融危機引發銀行界大規模裁員行動。）

Lay off 這類裁員多半是商業考量。可能是經營不善，或者景氣差，企業要減輕成本，不是針對個人性的懲罰，而是一個減少負擔的行動。
Fire相較之下就個人多了，是辭退、解僱。例如員工犯錯或者操守有問題，公司決定終止其職務。

近來更流行的一個講裁員的字，叫let go。
I am sorry I have to let you go.（抱歉，我必須讓你走。）這句話其實就是叫人走路，大概是老美最怕老闆說出來的一句話。

有人說，「You’re fired.」是一句狂傲的祈使句，「You’ve been let go.」雖然換湯不換藥，但起碼能降低員工在聽到晴天霹靂訊息時的創傷，算是有善意的退場機制，是委婉的一種。

同樣的，downsizing也有美化版本，有人會用
Right-sizing（合理精簡）直接說這是合理的，或者
Streamlining（流暢化、精簡化）

不那麼善用委婉語也不必感嘆。《The Economist》（經濟學人）的批評一針見血：委婉語讓惱人的結果得到了偽裝，比如 let go（讓他走人）表示解僱， right-sizing（合理精簡）表示大規模裁員。委婉語會取代原來的詞彙，可憐的行外人哪，只能對這些難解的言語望而生畏，而壞事和缺點會被掩藏得毫無破綻。

【盧麗蓮／綜合報導】現行法令規定，女性勞工生理假和病假天數併計，立委江惠貞認為此方式造成女性勞工病假縮水，昨立法院因此初審修法通過，女性勞工每年可有3天生理假不需併入病假計算，等於一年有33天的病假加生理假，其中30天為半薪，多出的3天生理假僱主可不給薪。

《蘋果》報導，上班族劉小姐說，修法沒感覺，多3天假卻沒薪水，不太可能請，因為生理痛也許是半天，卻要損失一天薪水，「划不來！」不願具名的人資主管則指出，一般女性員工生理痛，都會先請特休假，幾乎不可能請完半薪病假。
