其實這次 iPad 發表打了不少謠言的臉，先由 Apple 最會起的名字來說，iPad 換了一個 iPad Air 的名字，iPad mini 也採用了 iPad mini with Retina display 的命名方式，這讓 iPad 5 和 iPad mini 2 的名字顯得有點幽默。
再來有先前 iPad Air 加入 TouchID 的謠言也沒有成真，而 iPad mini Retina 直接升級到 A7 處理器，而不是採用 A6X，也讓兩者效能規格沒有差異。一方面是讓高效能的 A7 和省電的 M7 處理器來搞定 iPad mini Retina 的螢幕效能和耗電問題，另一方面是其他品牌的小平板規格面都已經追上，還採用 A6X 處理器會顯得有點劣勢。也因為這樣，iPad Air 和 iPad mini 變得只有尺寸大小的差別。
iPad Air 不意外走了輕巧的路線，但沒有增加任何新功能，像是 TouchID、慢動作錄影、802.11ac、256GB 的儲存空間，又或是更高的螢幕解析度。其實 iPad Air 的推出對於比較重度的使用者也許是更失望的，因為他們心中期待的是有更多功能的 iPad Pro 而不是一台更輕巧的 iPad Air。
變輕的 iPad Air 和 iPad mini Retina 在一退一進之外，讓兩者的規格幾乎一樣，都是 A7 處理器，2048 x 1536 解析度，7.5 mm 厚度。不同的就只有相反的螢幕大小和差 100 美元的價格，讓原來就打算買 iPad mini Retina 的人會有點想去買 iPad Air，也會讓本來想換 iPad Air 覺得 iPad mini 好像也不錯。
